MICRO ENVIRONMENT CONCEPT

This table top scene was modeled, and lit, and textured in Autodesk 3ds Max, and rendered with Mental Ray. 

It is a conceptual story-telling piece that captures the life of Marvel's Captain America as witnessed by his comic companion, Sgt. Bucky Barnes. This subject was chosen because superheroes have always held a special place in my own life, and Captain America is among those that have influenced me as a child and through adulthood.

LEATHER PROCEDURAL
The Winter Soldier's Russian Notebook

The worn leather cover of this notebook symbolizes the rough life Sgt. Barnes endured on his path to become The Winter Soldier. To achieve this look, a procedural texture is created through compositing Smoke and Cellular nodes. 

Definition of the cracked leather is accomplished by plugging Smoke and Cellular nodes into their own Output nodes to intensify contrast.  Pass through a Composite node > Bump Map shader > 0.3 Bump value gives the leather a raised and dimpled effect without any need for a Noise modifier.
DAY/NIGHT LIGHTING TESTS

DAY: Lighting the Micro Environment presented some particular challenges. Beginning with a Sky Portal overhead washed out the scene with too much diffuse and not enough deep shadow. 

The scene originates in a closed room with windows using a Daylight System and Sky Portals but the intensity of the lights was not correct. Because the setting of the scene is a cloudy day in Romania, the intent is to capture a midday haze with a blue hue.

A three-point lighting system is placed with an additional light down low at the floor to catch the side of the table.

NIGHT: A photometric light (set from Uniform Spherical to Spotlight) is placed in the scene. 
From there the falloff and hotspot adjustments give the desired effect.


In addition, a purple Omni light is placed in the scene to add a somewhat stylized element of the graphic novel mood.

Stayin' in Black (The Bee Gees + AC/DC Mashup by Wax Audio)

No cassette console would be complete without playing a little music! 

The Nakamichi 600 features two dial windows with meter needles. A set of two Dummy controllers are linked to the needle as an Audio Float and a .wav file. Now the Audio Float Dummy will move to the beat of the music track. 


TRS 1100 TRENCHER

This intimidating conctruction vehicle was modeled, and lit in 3ds Max, and rendered with Mental Ray.

CHAIN CONSTRUCTION WITH SPLINES & PATH CONSTRAINTS

A single plate of the track is all that is needed when using a spline and path constraints. By aligning the first plate to a spline in the shape of the TRS 1100 chain, a Path Constraint can be added.

The geometry is selected then within the Path Constraint editing panel, orientations are flipped and Follow checked on. Once this is done, the geometry should snap to the path, some rotating may be necessary to fit the path just right. 

Next, simply click and shift-drag the geometry to the next position with a good amount of spacing to create copies or instances depending upon need. There are around 50 chain plates on this spline. With the chain in place the spline is isolated so that its vertices can be manipulated to give the appearance of weight and sag.
